Design of Non Domestic Low Carbon Buildings

speaker: Professor Kevin Lomas, Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development, De Montfort University

Kevin Lomas is Director of the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD) and Professor of Building Simulation at De Montfort University

Following a first degree in Civil Engineering (Nottingham University) he undertook a PhD - measuring and modelling heat and mass transport due to moisture migration below freezing roads in the UK. The specific insights seem somewhat redundant in these days of global warming but the expertise gained found application in his postdoctoral work at De Montfort University (then Leicester Polytechnic) validating thermal simulation models of buildings (1984). A lectureship in the Department of Architecture sparked an enduring interest in buildings, their design and environmental performance, and the practical application of computer analysis methods. Alongside the late Prof. Bowman, he built the research capability upon which, in 1994, the IESD was founded.

Prof. Lomas has refereed for numerous journals and conferences, and acted as external examiner on MSc courses and for PhD students. He has published around 70 papers in refereed academic journals and conferences; contributed to the environmental design of some 18 buildings, a number of which have won architecture and/or environment awards; supervised to success 19 PhD students; and secured 34 research projects worth over £5m. These works, like the success of the Institute itself, were very much a team effort.
