IBPSA England Seminar Building Performance Simulation in Architectural Discourse
IBPSA (the International Building Performance Simulation Association) is a non-profit international society of building performance simulation researchers, developers and practitioners, dedicated to improving the built environment. This event is a joint event with the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, Newcastle University.
The aim of the conference is to understand the dialogue between building performance simulation and how it has an impact on architectural decisions at various stages in the design project. How this dialogue is conducted at a professional level and how this also has an impact on changing architectural education and its curriculum will be the main theme of this event.
Invited speakers will explain their practical experiences within the UK and how this has evolved over the last decade. The day will include a workshop to open the dialogue on whether architectural education needs to include building performance simulation in its curriculum so architects can assess their preliminary designs. This will be chaired by the speakers.

10:45-11:30 David Lloyd Jones, E-studio: "Building Simulation: Design Transformation or Design Verification?"
David Lloyd Jones is a founding director of Studio E Architects. David has a diverse experience ranging from research and development into housing and university standards to commercial centre city development, as well as authoring books and reports on sustainable architecture. In the early 1980s he was responsible for the design of the seminal energy conscious NFU Mutual and Avon Insurance Group’s Head Office at Stratford upon Avon. He has led a succession of leading edge sustainable projects including the Solar Office, Doxford International, in Sunderland, one of the largest PV integrated facades in Europe. He is an acknowledged expert and innovator in energy conscious and sustainable architecture.
11:30-12:15 Patrick Arends, Mecanoo Architects: ‘The Birmingham Library’
Working for Mecanoo architects, Patrick has worked on the design of the Birmingham Library building due for opening in 2013, aiming to be the largest library in Europe. The practice has a rich profile of engaging architectural buildings that have a strong underpinning philosophy of engaging with energy consciousness, sustainability and cultural value. Mecanoo started as a practice in 1984 and among their rich profile of architectural projects is the TU Delft library, and the national historic museum in the Netherlands.
12:15-13:00 Gordon Hudson, Mott MacDonald
Gordon Hudson is a technical director at Mott MacDonald responsible for building services design, sustainability and development. He has been involved in benchmarking sustainable design both as a practitioner and researcher. Gordon was among the first BREEAM for schools assessors in the UK and has provided advice on a number of PFI schools projects.
Current projects include sustainability design guidance for the Home Office and the development of an environmental assessment tool for the Abu Dhabi environmental agency. Gordon is chief examiner for the Engineering Council examination for internal environmental design, visiting research fellow at Northumbria University and building services external examiner at the University of the West of England.

13:45-14:30 Mathew Kitson, Hilson Moran: “From Swiss Re onwards”
Mathew Kitson is Director of Sustainability in Hilson Moran, directing one of the largest teams in the company providing environmental, sustainable and engineering design advice on a wide range of landmark projects in a number of countries including the UK, UAE, Italy, France and Spain. He specializes in the application of advanced environmental computer modelling and has provided environmental engineering advice on a number of notable buildings including Commerzbank Headquarters in Germany, the European Headquarters in Brussels and the National Assembly for Wales and Swiss RE, and the Pinnacle in London.
14:30-15:15 Mark Siddall, Devereaux Architects: “The Devonshire Building- a retrospective”
As sustainability champion at Devereaux Architects, Mark has a keen interest in sustainable design and has worked on a number of environmentally aware projects. Mark has conducted detailed research into low and net-zero carbon technologies. He has also developed an integrated design management system that reflects best practice and seeks to ensure that design and technological solutions are considered and incorporated using a least cost methodology. The Devonshire Building in Newcastle University designed by the practice has been awarded BREEAM Excellent and has several integrated sustainability design features and Mark will be explaining how the practice has learned from designing and monitoring the building’s performance.

15:30-16:30 Workshop Integration of Building Simulation in the Architectural Curriculum.
Facilitator Dr. Neveen Hamza
Neveen is the Vice Chair of the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA-England) and a lecturer in Architecture, School of Architecture Planning and Landscape, Newcastle University. Her research focuses on assessing architectural technologies using building performance simulation tools and how envelope design decisions have an impact on human well being. As an educator she is interested in integrating environmental simulation in the architectural curriculum and has published research in this area.
In this workshop attendees will be divided into four groups and each group will also include one of the speakers. The feedback from this event will feed into the review of the architecture curriculum in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, Newcastle University.
